New West Virginia men's basketball coach Darian DeVries has signed a fairly standard memorandum of understanding with the school, which covers his salary, buyout obligations and bonus structures over the course of the five-year deal.
DeVries will begin with a salary of $2.8 million for the 2024-25 season, and see his compensation rise by $100,000 over each of the next four years, culminating in a $3.2 million salary for the 2028-29 season.Â
DeVries can also earn a contract extension with a top six Big 12 finish in either of his first two seasons at WVU. If he achieves that, he will get an automatic one-year extension with another $100,000 range, making his salary $3.3 million for the 2029-30 season.
DeVries will also get as much as $100,000 in moving expenses from WVU, and a maximum of $15,000 for temporary housing ($5,000 per month for three months).
Finally, WVU will cover any buyout DeVries owes to his previous employer, Drake University, and also any associated taxes. The amount of that buyout was not disclosed in the term sheet.
Buyout and liquidated damages provisions are also fairly straightforward. If DeVries leaves WVU for another job, he will owe 37.5% of the remaining compensation on his contract to WVU as liquidated damages. If West Virginia terminates DeVries without cause, it will owe him 75% of the remaining total compensation on the contract.
Other provisions in the deal are standard ones that have been included on most other recent head coaching deals. He will receive a courtesy car, tickets to football and basketball games, and a $5,000 per year clothing allowance from the school's athletic gear supplier.
DeVries's bonus structure will also be similar to those of other Mountaineer head coaches. He'll receive incremental payments of $20,000 for a first round NCAA appearance up to $200,000 for a national title. Graduated bonuses of $10,000-$40,000 for finishes of fourth through first place in the Big 12 regular season, as well as $40,000 or $30,000 for a league tournament title or runner-up spot, are also in his deal.
Coach of the year awards, APR and academic achievements and season ticket sales levels will also net him anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000.
