The 2018 Almost Heaven BBQ Bash took place at TALA June 15 and June 16, with over 70 professional teams and 15 WV Backyard BBQ teams competing. This year’s winner was Spittin’ Feathers BBQ from Youngstown, OH. Pit Master was Tim McMahon. Spittin’ Feathers will now represent WV in the Jack Daniels Worldwide Invitational BBQ Tournament. The team also qualifies for the Sonny’s BBQ Invitational Tournament in FL, and the American Royal BBQ Championship in Kansas City.
New this year to the BBQ Bash was a steak cook-off contest. The Steak Cook-Off was open to everyone, with Lewis County’s own Larry Bailey of Main Street Cafe and Grill in Jane Lew coming in ninth out of 40 teams. His was the only West Virginia team to place in the top 40.
Other winners in the Overall Pork category were: second place, Wolf’s Revenge; third place, Aporkalypse Now; fourth place, 3 Eyz BBQ; fifth place, Rocky Top BBQ; sixth place, Old Virginia Smoke; seventh place, Shortsville Smokers; eighth place, 420 Q; ninth place, Sauced! BBQ; tenth place, Serial Griller.
Other award winners are as follows: People’s Choice went to Game On BBQ from Pittsburgh. Wing contest winners are: first place, Convicted Pigs BBQ from WV; second place, Black Dawg BBQ from PA; third place, Comin’ In Hot from PA.
Backyard BBQ team winners for chicken: first place, Brother-Uncle BBQ from PA; second place, Better BBQ Together; third place, Zen Piggy BBQ from VA.
Backyard BBQ team winners for ribs: first place, Davis BBQ Smokers from OH; second place, Bird Dog BBQ from WV; third place Eyes Itch You Not BBQ from MD.
Overall Backyard BBQ winners: first place, Brother-Uncle BBQ from PA; second place, Zen Piggy from VA; third place, D’Qued Barbecue.

The top finishing WV team was WV Loc-N-Loaded BBQ.
Ezra and Amanda Braden accepted a donation for Operation BBQ Relief. Operation BBQ Relief provides meals to residents and emergency personnel who are displaced due to natural or man made disasters.
Pet rescue All Mutts Matter also received a monetary donation and donations of pet goods, presented to Renee Moodispaw, area representative for the organization. BBQ team participant Dan Hixon rescued his own dog from All Mutts Matter, and helped bring the non-profit to the BBQ Bash this year.
Scott Myer of WV American Art Glass made the glass sculptures that were awarded to the winning teams. Organizer Jody Light said Myer custom made the statues to match the BBQ Bash logo. Local artist Jack Rich made the grand champion trophies. DJ Salty Dog provided the entertainment and PA system for the event.
