Travis Williston, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for Cunningham Powell Alexander, A.C. (CPA), spoke to the Weston Rotary, about the new branch location in Weston and how the differences between it and other accounting firms.
Williston, a Lewis County native, has worked for CPA for 10 years, previously working in the Morgantown branch before the Weston branch opened.
Although Williston is the only CPA stationed at the Weston branch, the other eight accountants that work for CPA also are available to help Lewis County residents and businesses.
The mission statement for the business is “to walk faithfully through the business of life, and to chart a course to your financial path for tomorrow.”
“What we are looking at, for our clients, is a long term relationship,” said Williston. “We want to help people meet their goals and success in business, and in life,” said Williston.
“We are here for the business of your life, not the life of your business,” said Williston.
Wiliston said that all the CPAs at CPA are working toward specializing in different types of accounting.
He said he specializes in helping businesses grow. This entails developing a plan to help the company grow within itself.
Strategic planning, and teaching clients how to keep growing the business without needing Williston’s help, is what his goals are when helping a business to grow, he said.
The closest person other than Williston, that specializes in his designation is located in Chicago.
“We are trying to take the pain away from owning your own business,” said Williston.
He said his office is trying to get business owners to work “on their business,” not necessarily “for the business.”
Williston said that CPA, can help anyone, even those on a fixed income or disability. He can help others learn to manage their money and how to make wise financial decisions.
James Alexander, the co-founder of CPA, and Jason Bolen, another CPA for the firm, are both Certified Financial Planners. This entails retirement management and managing different finances, including 401Ks.
Dan Powell, the co-founder of CPA, is a licensed Business Valuator. This means he tells clients what the business they are buying or selling is worth.
According to Williston, there are only three Certified Business Valuators in West Virginia.
The Weston branch of Cunningham Powell Alexander is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located on East Third Street.
