The WV Herb Association Fall Conference was held at WVU Jackson’s Mill last weekend. Classes were held on Appalachian Medicinal Herbs, beans, cooking, and plant dyes, among other topics.
President of the association, Tom Jones, has been a member of the association for 10 years. He said parents and grandparents always had home remedies, and he realized the knowledge was being lost with each generation dying off.
The association tries to have basic classes for beginners so they can learn how to use herbs and then utilize that knowledge.
Jones also discussed the stigma that exists with natural remedies. He remembers even his own friends teasing him about natural remedies, but now, “an amazing amount of people are going herbal and getting away from pharmaceuticals.”
The association is trying to establish a network through memberships, including business and individual. Membership information is available on their website, wvherbassociation.org. They also have a Facebook page, members and friends of wvherbassociation.
