SHINNSTON—The Robert L. Bland Middle School football team traveled to Shinnston last Wednesday to take on the Lincoln Middle School Wildcats. The Patriots fell 44-14 to a much faster Lincoln squad.
The Patriots received the opening kickoff and started driving. Dameon Wolfe had carries of four and five yards and Trenton Murphy added a couple.
Murphy then hit Harley Grogg for 18 yards through the air and another first down to take Bland into Lincoln territory.
The next Patriot pass was picked off and returned 63 yards for a Wildcat touchdown. Lincoln’s two point conversion was good and the Wildcats had an 8-0 lead.
The Patriots got the ball back and was on the move again. After moving into Lincoln territory for the second time, RLB fumbled and the Wildcats recovered.
Lincoln’s first offensive play was stuffed by Wofle, Grogg and Colton Conner. However, Lincoln’s second play was a break away 40 yard run for a TD. The conversion attempt was good and the Wildcats held a 16-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The ensuing drive, Bland had little success and gave up the ball on downs. Lincoln wasted little time scoring on their first play of the drive, a 39 yard run.
The conversion attempt was thwarted by Colton Conner who recovered a loose Wildcat ball. Again, RLB could not get back on the offensive track and had to punt. After a short punt Lincoln scored on their second play of the drive, this time from 24 yards out. The conversion attempt was good and Lincoln held a 30-0 advantage at the half.
The Wildcats scored on their second play from scrimmage in the second half, a 43 yard run. The conversion attempt failed and LMS held a 36-0 advantage.
The Patriots got the ball back and went to work. Jonah Clem and Wolfe carried most of the load. Wolfe got the Patriots on the board with a 38 yard sprint. Clem added the two point conversion bring the score to 36-8.
The ensuing kickoff was scooped up by Lincoln and returned 55 yards for the last Wildcat TD. The conversion was good and Lincoln held a 44-8 lead at the end of the third period.
Bland had one last hurrah as Wolfe added another Patriot touchdown on a four yard run. The conversion attempt failed and the score stood 44-14.
Robert L. Bland had some offense at times as they rolled up an even 200 yards; 182 rushing and 18 passing. Wolfe was the games leading rusher with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 23 totes. Clem added 31 yards on eight carries. Murphy hit one of two passes for 18 yards.
