After completing the regular season with a 15-8 record and earning the number one seed the Lewis County Minutemen found themselves at home for all of their games in the Region 2 Section 2 Sectional Tournament.
Lewis County opened up sectional play on May 8, when they hosted the Herbert Hoover Huskies. The Minutemen showed Hoover that their Number 1 seed was for real, as they scored runs in every inning and posted a 10-3 victory.
Lewis County got on the board with a first inning run when Drew Kuhn and Jared Skinner drew walks and Kuhn came home to score on a RBI single by Cole Barker. The Minutemen added another tally in the second inning as Will Hunt and Jacob White got on base with singles and Hunt came home to score on a RBI groundout by Chase Freeman.
Lewis County got three runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 5-0 on a RBI single by Hunt and a two run single by Freeman. A RBI groundout by Barker plated Kuhn as Lewis County made the score 6-0 after four innings of play.
Lewis County made it 7-0 with another tally in the home half of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Freeman which was his fourth RBI of the game. The Huskies finally got on the board in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to cut the Minutemen lead to 7-2 after five and half innings of play.
Lewis County changed that in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored three runs to take a 10-2 lead into the final inning of play. Barker led off the sixth inning with a solo home run and Jacob White drove home two with a one out double. Hebert Hoover added a run in the seventh inning, but Lewis County came away with a 10-3 win to open up sectional play.
Cole Barker and Jacob White each had three hits while Chase Freeman picked a pair of hits and four RBIs in the win.
Barker had a home run and three RBIs while Jacob White had a double and two RBIs. Cole Barker pitched 5.2 innings giving up just two runs on four hits while walking six and striking out none in picking up the mound win. Nick Gould toed the rubber for the final 1.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits and fanned two batters.
Next up for the Minutemen was the Nicholas County Grizzlies on May 10 in another home contest. The home team struck first with three runs in the second inning. Levi Fox walked to open the frame and Jakob Gragg came on to run for him Luke Dublin reached base on a fielders choice and Chase Freeman reached base on an infield single.
Jacob White then drove home Gragg with a squeeze bunt that the catcher threw down the right field line to allow Dublin and Freeman to score to make the game 3-0 in favor of Lewis County after two innings of play. Freshmen pitcher Will Hunt held Nicholas County scoreless for the first five innings and then allowed two sixth inning runs and got relief help from Nick Gould.
Gould inherited a bases loaded one-out jam with one run already in. The first batter then hit a ground ball that turned into an error to allow the second run for the Grizzlies to score.
Following a wild pitch to put runners at second and third the next batter grounded the ball to Freeman at shortstop thrown to Teran Allman at first, who then cut down the runner at third with at throw to Cole Barker who applied the tag to complete the inning ending double play.
Gould took the mound for the seventh inning and got the first out and then gave up a double and then gave way to Sophomore hurler Connor Johnson.
Johnson got two fly ball outs and earn the save as the Minutemen moved on the championship round with a 3-2 victory over Nicholas County. Hunt was the winning pitcher while Gould earned a hold. Lewis County collected only three hits all singles by Leo White, Chase Freeman and Jacob White.
After a day of rest, the Minutemen met back at home again on Saturday, May 12 when once again they met the Nicholas County Grizzlies in the championship round. A Lewis County win in the game gave them the sectional title while a Nicholas County win forced a winner take all game. Connor Johnson got the nod as the starting pitcher for Lewis County and gave up three hits and one run in the first inning as the Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead.
Johnson then settled in and held the Grizzlies scoreless for the next four innings. But Nicholas County starting hurler Jared Gregory held the Minutemen scoreless for the first four innings.
Lewis County finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning as Luke Dublin drew a one out walk and Jakob Gragg came in to run for him.
Chase Freeman then got the first base hit of the game for the Minutemen a bunt single, with runners on first and second Jacob White laid down a perfect bunt that was thrown away by the Nicholas County catcher and went down the right field line to allow Gragg and Freeman to score to put Lewis County up 2-1 after five innings of play.
Nicholas County tied the game at 2-2 after an RBI double from Nick Nutter when Lewis County went to the bullpen and bring in Cole Barker in relief of Johnson who turned in a fine performance on the hill for the Minutemen. Barker walked the first man he face in game and then got two fly ball out to end the Grizzlies threat as the game was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Berker led off the home half of the inning with a double to left center field.
Teran Allman popped up and Levi Fox came to the plate Fox then singled to right field to score Barker who slid home safely to give Lewis County a 3-2 lead with just one inning of play left. In the Nicholas seventh inning Barker issued a two out walk.
Then he got the next batter to hit a ball back to him on the mound and won the race to first base for the final out of the game and give Lewis County a 3-2 victory and the sectional championship.
The win gave Lewis County a 19-7 record on the season and they will move on to the regional round of play next week.
The Minutemen will enter regional play looking to gain a berth in the Class AA State Playoffs for the first time since the 1986 season.
The sectional win was a long and winding road for the current Lewis County juniors and Seniors who just two seasons ago went 2-22 on the season. Cole Barker was the winning pitcher for Lewis County while Lewis County had three hits, a double by Barker, and singles by Levi Fox and Chase Freeman. Members of the 2018 Region 2 Section 2 Champions include Senior Jacob White, Senior Drew Kuhn, Freshman Teran Allman, Junior Chase Freeman, Senior Jared Skinner, Senior Leo White, Junior Levi Fox, Sophomore Connor Johnson, Freshman Zane McCord, Senior Drew Rogers, Senior Nick Gould, Sophomore Collin Moneypenny, Senior Luke Dublin, Sophomore Kole Bozic, Junior Luke White; Junior Jakob Gragg, Sophomore Korbyn Tallarito, Freshman Tim Hunt, Sophomore Brayden Haggerty, Freshman Jacob Aman, Freshman Will Hunt; Senior Cole Barker; Freshman Jordan Gay, Freshman Tate Dever and Sophomore Bryson Greenlief.
Minutemen Head Coach Ronnie Clem, with Assistant Coaches John White and Tyler Wood, served for the season.
Lewis County’s opponent will be determined by the Region 2 Section 1 game, with Lewis County playing the winner.
During the three game sweep the Minutemen pitching staff allowed just seven runs in twenty one innings of work.
