Minutemen Gain First Two Wins of Season


After a one-point loss to Braxton County to open the season, the Minutemen basketball team hit the road on Dec. 9, as they traveled to take on Riverside in a non-conference game.
Riverside took the early lead as they outscored the Minutemen 10-8 in the opening quarter. In the second quarter Riverside once again outscored Lewis County 10-8 to take a 20-16 halftime lead.
Lewis County took control of the game in the third quarter as they outscored Riverside 22-12 in the quarter to take a 38-32 lead into the final canto.
The Minutemen hung on to that lead and get their first win of the season 51-49 over Riverside to even their record at 1-1 on the young season. Shawn Moran led the Minutemen with 13 points while Levi Brown would add 11 points.
It was back to the home court on Dec. 13, when they would host the Liberty Mountaineers in a Bug Ten Conference tilt.
The Minutemen outscored the Mountaineers 17-13 to have the lead after one quarter of play. Liberty had the halftime after they outscored Lewis County 18-12 and have a 31-29 halftime lead.
The Mountaineers carried that two point lead into the fourth quarter as both teams tallied 15 points each to make the score 46-44 in favor of Liberty with just one quarter to play.
Lewis County tied the game on a three-pointer by Shawn Moran, followed by a three by Caden Rohrbough to give Lewis County a 53-50 lead with 4:47 left to play in the game.
Dalton Westfall would tied the game at 53, all when he scored on a two-point basket and one. Lewis County would then score the game’s next 10 points to take a 65-53 lead with just 1:28 left to play.
Moran started the scoring barrage with two free throws followed by a two point basket by Asa Post, two free throws by Levi Brown, a three pointer by Drew Kuhn and a two point basket and foul shot by Moran.
Joe Swiger hit a three pointer for Liberty to cut the lead to 65-56 and Asa Post scored the final points of the night as Lewis County took the win 67-56 to move to 2-1 on the season. Shawn Moran would lead the Minutemen in scoring with 15 points followed by Caden Rohrbough with 10 points.
Lewis County would conclude the week with another Big Ten contest on December 15 when they welcomed the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears to South Weston.
The Polar Bears scored the game’s first 12 points, and had a 29-10 lead after one quarter of play.
Fairmont Senior did not look back as they cruised to a 95-41 win over the Minutemen, who saw their record fall to 2-2 with the loss.
Avery Post, with 14 points, and Shawn Moran, with 12 points, paced the Minutemen scoring attack.
The Minutemen will be in action on Dec. 20, when they travel to Preston County for  Big Ten battle with the Preston Knights.
