The 2018 Lewis County Minutemen football team traveled to Bridgeport on Friday, August 24 to meet the Bridgeport Indians in a Big Ten Conference game to open the 2018 campaign.
The Indians got the ball first and wasted little time in getting on the board when Jake Bowen ran it in from 74 yards out and Evan Ogden kicked the extra point to give Bridgeport an early 7-0 lead. Lewis County got the ball for the first time on the night and could not get the offense moving and punted the ball back to the Indians.
Indians put together a 12 play 59 yard drive that ended when Brian Henderson scored on a five yard run and after another kick from Ogden the Indians now had a 14-0 lead.
Lewis County would once again go three and out and Bridgeport went 70 yards this time with Bowen scoring from 3 yards out and after another PAT from Ogden the Indians now had a 21-0 lead. On their next possession Lewis County offense showed some life after a big kickoff return from Aaron Beam gave the Minutemen their best starting field position of the night at the mid field stripe after a 32 yard return.
Lewis County’s drive stalled at the 11 yard line and Jared Griffith came on and kicked a 28 yard field goal to give Lewis County their first points the season and cut the Indians lead to 28-3. The momentum would not shift to Lewis County however on the ensuing kickoff D’Andre Halloway returned it 96 yards and after Ogden added another PAT the Indians now led 28-3.
The two teams traded possessions and on the next Lewis County one Bridgeport forced a fumble that they would recover and would cash in Bowen scored his third TD of the night and after Ogden added the kick Bridgeport led 35-3.
On the ensuing kickoff the Indians once again recovered a Lewis County fumble and once again took advantage when Ogden connected for a 27 yard field goal giving the Indians a 38-3 halftime lead.
Lewis County got the ball first to begin the second half and went three and out. The Indians extended the lead when Trey Pancake scored from 2 out and Ogden would hit his 6th PAT of the night.
Lewis County would not quit though and got their first touchdown of the season when recent transfer Marshall Hobbs raced 72 yards to the end zone and Jared Griffith added the extra point to make the score 45-10.
Hobbs would finish out the scoring for the game when he raced 37 yards for his second touchdown of the night and Griffith added the extra point making the score 45-17.
Lewis County is 0-1 on the season and will host Fairmont Senior this Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Marshall Hobbs finished the night with 131 yards rushing on 8 carries and two touchdowns. Caden Rohrbough completed 2 of 11 passes for 2 yards with both being caught by Chase Beam.
