Medicare Terminates Payments to Sharpe Hospital

William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital was given notice by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services that their participation in the Medicare program would be terminated effective today.

"The Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has determined that the Williams R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital is not in compliance with the Medicare requirements for a psychiatric hospital," the termination notice states.

The notice goes on to state that the Medicare program will not make payments for recipients who are admitted on or after Sept. 28. Payments will continue for a maximum of 30 days for those admitted prior to Sept. 28.

While the letter gave no reason for termination, Allison Adler, a spokesperson for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources told the Charleston Gazette-Mail, "The main reasons for the decision were due to inadequate documentation and insufficient treatment plans and follow up.

"Secretary [Bill] Crouch continues to work with CMS regarding this issue in regards to the final determination," she added.
