Maids Varsity picks up two big wins

The Lewis County Maids varsity basketball team just completed three games in which they went 2-1 during the three-game streak.
The first of the three tilts was a road trip to Clarksburg, where they faced the Liberty Mountaineers in a Big Ten Conference match up.
The Maids got started quickly when they outscored the Mountaineers 25-14 in the first quarter to take the early lead.
Lewis County continued to roll in the second quarter as they had a 25-7 scoring edge to take a commanding 50-21 lead into the break.
The second half saw the Maids outscore the Mountaineers 32-12 and pick up their third win of the season 82-33 over Liberty.
Sarah Post scored 17 points to lead the Maids while Tiffany Curtis added 14 points, Deserea Ferguson added 14 points and Anna Tucker added 13 points, pacing a balanced Lewis County scoring attack.
Lewis County hit the road again on Dec. 15, when they traveled to Fairmont for a Big Ten contest against the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears.
The Polar Bears took the lead after one quarter of play as they outscored the Maids 17-7. Lewis County then outscored Fairmont Senior 21-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-27 halftime lead.
The Maids stretched that lead to four points as they outscored the Polar Bears 16-13 to take 44-40 lead into the final quarter of play.
Fairmont Senior outscored Lewis County 13-9 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 53-53.
In the extra session, the Bears earned the hard-fought win as they outscored the Maids 10-7 and claimed a 63-60 win.
Lewis County once again had a balanced scoring sheet as Bella Posey and Sarah Post scored 14 points each, while Emma Cayton scored 13 points and Deserea Ferguson scored 12 points for the Maids.
On Dec. 19, the Maids returned home as they faced the Preston Knights in a Big Ten tilt. Preston started the game by scoring the first seven points. Lewis County then scored the next seven points to tie the game at 7-7.
Anna Tucker scored two points, Sarah Post scored  three points and Bella Posey scored two points and lead the Maids’ run to tie the game.
The Knights scored two points to take the lead, while Tucker added a free throw to make the score 9-8.
Four straight points by Preston made the score 13-8 and then Emma Cayton hit a three-pointer and Post added a two-point basket to tie the game at 13-13. Preston then got a free throw and Tucker closed out the scoring for the opening quarter, when she hit three of four free throws in the final seconds to give the Maids their first lead of the night at 16-14.
Preston struck first in the second quarter to tie the game at 16 all and Tucker gave the Maids the lead again at 18-16 after another two-point basket, only to see the Knights tie it again at 18-18.
Then, Cayton connected on another three-pointer to give Lewis County a lead that they would not give up for the rest of the contest.
The Maids ended the half with a 34-27 lead. Lewis County took control of the game in the third quarter, as they outscored Preston 22-6 in the frame to take a 56-33 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Maids used a 10-0 run and an 8-0 run to fuel their third quarter scoring barrage.
Both teams tallied 15 fourth quarter points, and Lewis County got a 71-48 win over Preston to raise their record for the season to 4-2.
Sarah Post lead the way for the Maids, with a game high of 24 points, while teammates Bella Posey had 14 points and Anna Tucker chipped in 12 points to the inning cause.
The Maids are scheduled to play in the Ritchie County Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30. They are set to play Lincoln County on Dec. 29 in the opening night of the tourney.
