America’s Got Talent Season Six winner, Landau Murphy Jr., will be performing a holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 8 at Stonewall Resort. Murphy, Jr. is a West Virginia native, hailing from Logan County. He will have special guest, Bianca Ryan, performing, as well. Ryan was AGT’s Season One winner.
Murphy, Jr. first auditioned for AGT in New York City. The singer, who has had no formal training, said singing with Patti Labelle when he won AGT was a dream come true.
“As a little kid I always said I would sing with her, but I never thought it would happen.”
Murphy, Jr. focuses his talents on soul music, and has sung many cover tunes by Frank Sinatra and the like. He said his next album, however, will be all original songs.
After winning AGT, Murphy, Jr. said life has been like a whirlwind, gaining fans globally, including places like Uganda and Russia. He is also planning a trip to London to perform soon.
“Everything in my life has been going great.”
Traveling can be chaotic, Murphy, Jr. said, but as soon as he lands in Charleston, he feels a sense of calm. Coming home to Logan, the place where he was born and raised, makes him realize he’d rather live here when not on the road.
“I’d rather be here, everything is real.”
Murphy, Jr. also gives back to several charitable organizations, including the Children’s Home Society of WV, where he serves on the board, and the Appalachian Children’s Chorus, among many others.
Murphy, Jr. said that growing up he watched his mom and grandmother help those less fortunate, and has carried on what they instilled in him.
“My goal is to always give back more than I take.”
Murhpy, Jr. has several shows scheduled during the holiday season, so if you can’t make it to the Dec. 8 show, check out his website for future concert dates, www.landaumurphyjr.com.
