JV Patriots stop B-UMS 38-26

The Robert L. Bland Middle School Patriots JV boys tipped off their 2018-2019 campaign Saturday, Dec. 1, with a convincing win over the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Buccaneers 38-26.
The Patriots jumped out to an early lead after three pointers from Keller Bennett and Hunter Starett found their mark, forcing B-UMS to burn an early time out.   After the timeout the Bucs got themselves back in the game and the first quarter ended with B-UMS holding an 8 to 7 lead.
The Patriots began to pull ahead in the second quarter of action in a game that was played at a torrid pace, with both teams using pressure to try to gain an advantage.  The Patriots used a three pointer by David Hairfield  and points from free throws to extend their halftime lead to 19 to 13.
It was a lead the Patriots would never surrender as they shook off the early season jitters and again outscored the Bucs 19 to 13 in the second half for a 38 to 26 victory to start off the season.
The Patriots were paced in scoring by Bennett who used a pair of threes to help him tally 12 points for the contest in addition to grabbing 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Dylan Messenger made his presence felt inside adding 8 points and grabbing 6 boards.
Pason Kelley added 6 points and 5 caroms including 3 offensive rebounds.   Manny Robinson was a terror on opposing ball handlers nabbing 5 steals in the contest.
The JV squad is next in action Thursday, Dec. 6 when they open up the home portion of their schedule against South Harrison Middle with tip-off set for 4 p.m. They will also participate in a four team tournament at Washington Irving Middle School on Friday and Saturday with a scheduled tip off for Friday’s game being set for 7:45 p.m.
