The Lady Patriots JV basketball team participated in the Tygart Valley Invitational on Feb. 13 and Feb. 15. The Lady Patriots took on Marlinton in the first game and after a slow start the Lady Patriots rolled to a 46-15 victory.
Courtney Hartley controlled the game as she had 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Haylee Lewis and Maggie Wyatt added six points each. Bo Probst, Jazilyn Piggie, Channing Carson and Faith Heater added four points each, while Lillie Cayton, Addison Heath and Chloe Richards rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Lady Patriots played in the championship taking on the host squad, Tygarts Valley.
“Tygarts Valley was tall and quick so I knew it would be a battle,” stated coach Glen Pratt.
Tygarts Valley jumped out to a 4-0 lead early on and held the upper hand at halftime with 10-9.
“They played a 1-3-1 defense, which we figured was going to happen,” said Pratt. “We had trouble getting our offense to a 2-1-2 and it caught Tygarts Valley off guard, starting in the third quarter.”
Cayton drained a three-pointer and baskets by Wyatt and Heath, plus a stifling 3-2 defense, turned the tides for the Lady Patriots and they rolled to a 26-16 championship win.
Wyatt had six points, followed by Cayton with five points, and Lewis, Hartley and Piggie all with four points. Heath rounded out the scoring with three points. Hartley grabbed nine rebounds in the hard-fought victory.
“Coach Minigh and I are so proud of how far this team improbed this year and winning this tournament proved it. Tygarts Valley is a talented and well coached team and we had to give it our all to gain the championship. I would like to thank the huge group of parents that made the trip to cheer us on. It was truly a great season of Lady Patriot basketball,” concluded Pratt.
