John William Oliver, 76, of Weston, passed away at 1:14 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018, surrounded by loving family.
He was born in Weston on March 20, 1942, a son of the late William Walter Oliver and Katherine Mildred Ervin Oliver.
On June 13, 1964, he married the love of his life Dorma J. Ellis and she will miss him dearly after just over 54 wonderful years of marriage.
His kind words, big heart, and love of his family are traits that will be remembered by his two children: John William Oliver Jr. and wife, Laura, of Fairmont, and Deborah Linn Oliver Gump and husband, David, of Weston; six grandchildren: Courtney Oliver, Kayleigh Oliver, John Curtis Oliver, David Tyler Gump, Dylan James Gump, and Delaney Linn Gump; one sister, Marilyn Comberiati of Weston; two brothers-in-law: Eddie Ellis and wife, Debbie, of Weston, and Donald Ellis of Martinsburg; one sister-in-law, Judy Cogar of Weston; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and one beloved miniature pinscher and Jack Russell Terrier mix, Buster.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law: Joseph Comberiati, Wally Cogar, and William Ellis.
John was extremely community oriented and participated in —or was a member of—several organizations over the years including: the Weston City Council, the Solid Waste Board for Gilmer and Lewis counties, the Weston Lions Club, the Heart Association of Lewis County, the Weston J.C.’s, and was a former EMT for the Lewis County EMS.
He was also a member of the Lewis County Senior Center Board and the Summer Nights Cruizin’ Association. Having the knowledge and membership of both, he often organized the car show for the Lewis County Senior Center. John loved working on cars and possessed a few antique cars of his own.
John was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church. He was also affiliated with St. Matthew United Methodist Church as a custodian and performed maintenance tasks. John retired at age 55 with 38 years of service from Equitable Gas Company. He was an active little league basketball and baseball coach, and a boy scout leader of Troop #72 for many years. Above all he loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events and musical recitals.
