After an opening day win over Herbert Hoover and a 2-2 record on a trip to Topsail, North Carolina, the Lewis County Minutemen baseball got back home and battled the elements in hopes of playing games.
Finally, the weather cooperated and the Minutemen returned to action on April 5, when they hosted the Grafton Bearcats in a Big Ten Conference matchup. Grafton scored two first innings runs to take an early 2-0 lead.
Lewis County, after being held scoreless in the first inning, erupted for nine runs in the home half of the second inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Minutemen got an RBI single by Luke White, a 2 RBI single by Chase Freeman, an RBI single by Leo White and a two-run home run by Levi Fox to cap the nine-run explosion. After giving the Bearcats three runs in the top of the third inning, the Minutemen scored two more runs in their half of the inning on a RBI single by Jacob White and an RBI squeeze bunt by Drew Kuhn.
Lewis County plated two more runs in the fourth inning on RBI walks to Freeman and Jacob White. The Minutemen plated single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to claim a 15-5 win over Grafton.
The fifth inning run was an unearned run, while Leo White provided the winning tally with an RBI double. Luke White pitched the first three innings, allowing five runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking two in picking up the mound win, while Nick Gould pitched three perfect innings in relief.
At the plate the Minutemen were paced by two hits each by Leo White, Chase Freeman and Jacob White. The Minutemen had three players with two RBIS each which included Freeman, Jacob White and Levi Fox who had a two-run home during the game.
The Minutemen were back in action on April 6, with another home contest, this time, a non-conference tilt with the Nicholas County Grizzlies.
This game turned out to be a pitcher’s due,l as runs were at a premium. Lewis County struck first, as Leo White and reach third base and came home to score. This was after Cole Barker reached first base after striking out and after a missed third strike by the catcher Leo White came home on the throw to first base. Nicholas County plated two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Lewis County after stranding several runners finally broke through and scored the winning runs.
Leo White led off the frame with a single and went to second on a stolen base and to third on a wild pitch. Drew Kuhn got a walk and stole second to set up Jared Skinner with runners on second and third, who hit a ground ball to the shortstop fielded the ball and threw out Leo White at the plate, trying to score.
Cole Barker drew a walk to load the bases. With Levi Fox at the plate, the Minutemen attempted to score with the squeeze play, but Nicholas County appeared to have the right play on, as they pitched out, but the throw was wild and Kuhn scored to tie the game at two.
Fox drew a walk to once again load the bases. This time, it was Luke Dublin at the dish. Dublin then lined a single to left field to score Skinner for the walk off winner and Lewis County raised its record to 5-2.
Starting pitcher Connor Johnson pitched 5-plus innings and kept Lewis County in the game as he held the Grizzlies to just two runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking two.
Will Hunt came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit, while fanning three batters to earn the mound win. Leo White had two hits for the Minutemen, while Jared Skinner and Luke Dublin had one hit each. The Minutemen have four games scheduled for this week, including April 9, at home versus Bridgeport, April 10, at Clay County, April 11, at Nicholas County and April 12, at home versus Elkins.
