Catherine Juanita “Katy” Sumpter, 86, of Hinzman St., Weston, passed away peacefully at 5:13 a.m., on Sunday, October 15, 2017, in the Colonial Place Assisted Living Facility in Elkins, following complications from pneumonia and several years of dementia.
She was born in Weston on August 21, 1931, a daughter of the late Roland “Red”Belt and Agnes Blake Belt.
On November 17, 1951, she married the one and only love of her life, Clarence Earl Sumpter Jr., and they celebrated just three years of marriage before his passing on October 20, 1955.
Her signature class and grace, and quick-witted nature will be carried on by her two daughters, whom she adored: Pam Cain and husband, Kent Gande, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Beth Wade and husband, Gary, of Weston. She leaves behind five beautiful grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will dearly miss the unconditional love of “Mom Kate. Her fun-loving spirit will be remembered by her three siblings: Tony Belt of Weston, Scott Belt and wife, Jennifer, of Weston, Helen “Annie”Harris and husband, Eugene “Red”, of West Milford and Susan Moneypenny of Weston; sister-in-law, Patty Belt, of Weston; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she will be joyfully reunited in Heaven with four siblings: Roland “Pepper” Belt and Ronald “Dick” Belt, Mary Ellen Robinson, and Janet Gay.
Katy’s professional tenacity served her well while she was employed by Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Dr. Wagoner, DDS, Grief Brothers in Weston, and at Citizen’s Bank of Weston, where she retired. She had a deeply rooted sense of community and civic responsibility. She enjoyed attending and supporting activities that promoted and celebrated community teamwork and friendship. She was inducted into the Voters Hall of Fame for her long, consistent voting record and she often volunteered to transport neighbors and friends to the voting booths, which she often worked, so they could exercise their right to vote. She was a member of the Theresa Snaith Auxillary at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a member of the Bendale United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. As an avid sports fan, she mostly followed WVU football and basketball, but had a special place in her heart for watching her grandchildren play sports, as they were the light of her life.
