On Monday, the Lewis County tennis team finished off their regular season with their last match against Notre Dame. This match was also a special match to the three senior players as they were presented gifts and honored by their coaches, family, and teammates during Senior Night.
Seniors Jonathan Sanchez, Ethan Thomas, and Deanna Pascasio walked onto the court with their families, while coach Shannon Thomas joked with and praised her players who she has worked with since they were freshmen.
The Lewis County tennis team, also honored the two senior players from Notre Dame, and gave each a bouquet of flowers.
Lewis County started the Big 10 Tournament on Thursday and ended on Saturday, playing at Lewis County Park and West Virginia Wesleyan College, in Buckhannon, against teams throughout the region.
The boys tied for third overall with Elkins, out of 12 teams, with Lincoln taking first and Bridgeport taking second. The coach from Lincoln was named Coach of the Year.
Sanchez defeated Cade Garrett from Buckhannon in the quarterfinals but fell to Noah Carr from Elkins in the semifinals. Carr went on to win the boys seed one singles tournament over Lincoln in the championship.
Ethan Thomas, seed two singles, defeated Tanner Davis of Liberty in the quarterfinals, but fell to Ben Holbert of Bridgeport in the semifinals, who defeated Lincoln in the championship.
Dylan King, seed three singles, defeated Will Twigg 8-4 in the quarterfinals, but fell to Ethan Sutton of Elkins in the semifinals, who then lost to Lincoln in the championship round.
Collin Dodson, seed four singles, won against Dylan Wolfe of Phillip Barbour in the quarterfinals, but lost to Izzik Haymond in the semifinals, who then won the championship against North Marion.
Ethan Thomas and Sanchez, first seed doubles, defeated Buckhannon in the quarterfinals, but lost to Lincoln 6-8 in the semifinals, but Lincoln fell to Bridgeport in the championship round.
Second Seeded Doubles Team King and Dodson, defeated Phillip Barbour in the quarterfinals, and lost to Lincoln in the semifinals, Lincoln then defeated Bridgeport in the finals.
Jared Snyder and Brandon Flesher, seed three doubles, defeated Fairmont Senior in the quarter finals, but were not victorious against Bridgeport in the semifinals. Bridgeport won against Lincoln in the championship.
The Lewis County girls team ranked overall seventh in the competition out of 12 teams, with Lincoln taking the championship and Bridgeport taking second.
Anna Tucker, seed one singles, lost her match against Phillip Barbour’s Mikala Starkey. Jade Berry on Lincoln, defeated Elysia Cain of Liberty in the championship.
Sky Nichols, seed two singles, defeated Karissa Towns of Fairmont Senior in the quarterfinals, but fell to Lincoln in the semifinals. Abigail Naughton of Buckhannon defeated East Fairmont in the championship round.
Claire Dever defeated Malju Hyvarinin in the seed three singles’ quarterfinals, but lost of Grace Ebert of Bridgeport in the semifinals, Ebert then defeated Lincoln for the championship win.
Pascasio, seed four singles, lost to Cloie Mosesso of Phillip Barbour in the quarterfinals. Bridgeport defeated Lincoln for the championship.
Tuker and Nicholas, seed one doubles, defeated Grafton 8-0, but fell to North Marion in the quarterfinals, with Lincoln taking the championship against East Fairmont.
Dever and Pasasio, seed two doubles, lost to Phllip Barbour 5-8.
Makenna Spangler and Savanna King, seed three doubles, defeated Elkins in the quarter finals, but fell to Bridgeport in the semifinals. Bridgeport then lost the championship round to Lincoln.
The Lewis County tennis team will now start preparations for the AA Regional tennis meet, which then will lead them to states.
